The Story Behind Biz Brainery

Biz Brainery was built on a simple idea: small businesses deserve the same level of financial insight and strategic guidance as larger organizations, delivered in a way that actually fits how small businesses operate. That idea took root in Melissa Sager’s career, spent entirely in small business and organizational environments.

That environment cultivated innovation, inspired enthusiasm, and revealed the value of using technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness. It also brought broad exposure to every part of an organization, from cross departmental projects to strategic planning to relationship building, and it led Melissa to start Biz Brainery. From the beginning, the approach has been holistic, rooted in true collaboration with team members across every discipline. 

Biz Brainery brings that same collaborative mindset into every client engagement, with a passion for guiding business owners and their teams toward their fullest potential.

Melissa didn’t set out to find a partner so much as the right partner found her — and when she found Deepika, it just clicked. The two work well together, share a similar approach to client work, and have built the kind of professional and personal relationship that makes collaboration easy. Deepika puts it a little more colorfully: she felt like the prince in Cinderella, trying on slipper after slipper until she finally found the one that fit. That fit is Melissa — patient, willing to give Deepika autonomy with her work anda the staff, and someone Deepika is continually learning from.

Deepika’s background in audit and controllership means she’s the one in the weeds — reviewing financials for accuracy, thoroughness, and proper supporting documentation. That frees Melissa to focus on the big picture: strategy, planning, and the broader financial and operational health of the business. It’s not just theory — when a client with a European subsidiary needed help with a consolidation report, Melissa drew on her foreign exchange and multi-company consolidation experience to flag issues with intercompany balances, while Deepika dug into the details to figure out why the elimination entries weren’t offsetting and built a process to get it right going forward.

Melissa Sager

Melissa brings breadth and depth of experience to her work as a Fractional CFO for small businesses — she understands the whole business, not just the numbers. Using data, strategy, and years of hands-on experience, she identifies problem areas, both financial and operational, and builds strategies to solve them, helping business owners reach their goals at every stage, whether that’s getting a startup off the ground, driving profitability, fueling growth, or planning an exit.

She combines that straightforward honesty with strong planning and project management skills, so goals don’t just get identified — they get done. Her wide network of business contacts means she often has a trusted connection ready for whatever a client needs next. Deepika Yeldandi

Deepika brings over 25 years of experience in controller-level bookkeeping and financial accuracy to Biz Brainery. A natural people person, she builds her client relationships on strong customer service and genuine connection, and she lights up at the challenge of a new project or new client. She loves diving deep into a client’s financials to figure out how to best present their data — reviewing from a mile-high view to determine what a client truly needs and how they can make better business decisions.

Her career spans the startup world, consulting firms, and independent practice, giving her broad exposure to different industries, software systems, and team environments. That range shows up in how she works: she believes in staying adaptable to each client’s needs and presenting multiple paths to get the job done, drawing on lessons from seeing how various companies solve similar problems. She brings an audit-ready mindset to every engagement, so clients are always prepared for their next big step.

That drive shows up outside the office too. Deepika swam and played water polo all through college and on a master’s team afterward, then moved into relay triathlons before eventually going solo. It’s the same instinct she brings to client work — pushing for the mile-high view while also having the endurance to go the distance on the details alone.
